Diabetic Dog Companion is a free tool for owners of dogs with diabetes. It helps with part-meal dose adjustments, glucose curve logging, diet planning, and puts the most important facts close at hand.
It never sets or changes your dog's insulin dose; that is always your vet's decision. All guidance is sourced from the 2026 AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs and manufacturer package inserts.

This page does arithmetic on the dose your vet prescribed; it never sets or changes that dose itself.
If your dog ate only part of the meal, adjust the dose. Drag the slider, or weigh what's left for an exact figure.
For a recurring part-meal or a second missed meal in a row, phone your vet rather than adjusting the dose yourself.
This scale is the author's own, more cautious rule. AAHA's is simpler, and the card below shows how the two compare. After a reduced dose, do not make up for the missed meal with extra food or treats before the next meal.
The part-meal helper above is the author's own approach, based on experience, not the AAHA guidelines. AAHA's own rule is simpler: full dose at half a meal or more; half dose for anything less, including nothing eaten at all. There is no scale in between in AAHA's own rule. A dog that eats a little and a dog that eats nothing get the same half dose.
Where the two differ, that is deliberate: trading a slightly higher glucose reading for a lower chance of hypoglycaemia. If you are not sure which fits your dog, ask your vet.
If you suspect a hypo, treat it immediately (the red Emergency button) and phone your vet.
Never inject less than 11 hours after the previous injection. Two doses working at the same time significantly increases the risk of a dangerous low. If an injection is late, still give it once your dog has eaten, a late dose is better than none; just push the next one later too, so the gap from the late one stays at least 11 hours, rather than keeping to the usual clock time.

The green band is where most readings should sit (4.4–11 mmol/L · 80–200 mg/dL); an occasional reading up to 16.7 (300) is acceptable. Gold dashed lines are your meal/injection times; the green shaded bands are walks. The lowest point (the nadir) is marked in red; it is the number your vet uses to judge the dose.

• Weakness or wobbling
• Trembling or shivering
• Glassy or unfocused eyes
• Confusion or disorientation
• Unsteady walking, stumbling
• Seizure or collapse
If you see any of these, act immediately. Do not wait to test.
Never give insulin during a hypoglycaemic episode itself, before glucose has come back up. Once the low is confirmed and your dog has recovered, the 2026 AAHA guidelines say you don't need to wait for the vet to decrease or skip the next scheduled dose; never increase it on your own. Still tell your vet what happened, since a repeated hypo is worth a proper review of the dose.
Common causes include: too much insulin relative to food eaten, a smaller meal than usual, unusual exercise shortly after injection, a fur shot where the dose was repeated, or the Ketoconazole drug interaction (which reduces the body's ability to counteract insulin). Tell your vet which you suspect.

There's a lot on this page, but to begin you only need two things: how much to feed, and, if you need a new food, one that isn't too high in fat or starch. Here's the short path. Protein, fibre and the meal builder can wait until you've found your feet.
Enter your dog's ideal weight and activity level to see daily calories; then the food list below shows grams per meal.
Based on the Waltham Energy Calculator. Use ideal weight, not current weight if your dog has lost condition.
Mix up to 3 foods and check the total calories and combined fat. Search by name to pick from the list, or enter values manually for any food not listed (e.g. fresh mackerel).
Food not in the list above? Enter figures from the food label. Fat and moisture give you the true fat; add protein, fibre and food type to also get an estimated carbohydrate figure.
Give this food a name to save it; it'll then show up in Food finder, Meal builder and the swap calculator too.
If your usual food runs out or your dog goes off it, this works out how many grams of a different food gives the same calories per meal.
